Beckenbauer Targets Mourinho As Hitzfeld's Replacement
Jose Mourinho's brand of dull but effective football could be on show at Bayern Munich if Franz Beckenbauer gets his way
Jose Mourinho's next step in management could take him to Germany after the Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer admitted he would be interested in signing the former Chelsea manager.
Mourinho does not speak German, but Beckenbauer believes there is more than enough time for him to learn the language before Bayern's current coach, Ottmar Hitzfeld, leaves at the end of the season.
"He [Mourinho] could do a language course between now and the summer, so why not?" Beckenbauer wrote in Bild. "Our club needs a big name. He has got to be a great tactician, have already accumulated experience and have command of the German language."
Bayern suffered a disappointing season last year, failing to qualify for the Champions League, something fans view as a minimum requirement. This season the club have spent heavily, bringing in the likes of Luca Toni, Franck Ribéry and Miroslav Klose, and although they top the Bundesliga on goal difference, their last few games have included draws with Bolton, Hertha Berlin and bottom-of-the-table Duisburg.
Mourinho has been linked to numerous jobs at Europe's top clubs since leaving Chelsea, including Real Madrid and Milan, as well as the England post before Fabio Capello took the role.
