Michael Concoran

Obituary: Bookseller who collected first editions and made a small name for himself in the transatlantic trade
My cousin Michael Concoran, who has died aged 62 from stomach cancer, displayed optimism and patience in an uncertain world.

He had lived in London since 1968, when he left Killarney, Ireland, to join the Franciscan friars. He had no great intention of devoting his life to the order, but it offered a respectable route for a gay young Kerryman to move away from the conservative environment in his homeland. After he later left the friary, he met a young Bavarian, George, with whom he enjoyed an exciting journey across various world cities through George's promotions in the hotel trade. He lovingly nursed George until his death from Aids in 1986.

Michael maintained an interest in bookselling and took up collecting first editions, establishing a small name in the transatlantic trade. He was a generous host to family members visiting his flat in Hyde Park Mews, central London. His faith returned in the 1990s and he found solace at the Farm Street church, Mayfair, where a memorial service was held for him.
