Late Defoe Winner Sinks Manchester City
Bolton humble Wigan in four-goal haul
Pascal Chimbonda and Jermain Defoe both scored for Tottenham in a 2-1 win over a Manchester City team reduced to 10 men when Stephen Ireland was sent off.
Chimbonda gave Tottenham the lead on half-time when he managed to guide the ball into the net after Dimitar Berbatov had flicked on a Jermaine Jenas free-kick.
Rolando Bianchi headed City's equalizer from a Martin Petrov corner, but Ireland was sent off for a tackle on Lee Young-Pyo with less than 10 minutes to play and Tottenham took advantage immediately as Steed Malbranque's shot hit the post and Defoe pounced to score the winner.
Meanwhile, Bolton's good form under Gary Megson continued as they beat Wigan 4-1 and leapt to 13th place in the Premier League.
For the second game running, an early defensive mistake led to Wigan conceding a goal.
Titus Bramble was the culprit against Manchester City last weekend and this time Paul Scharner failed to pull out of an attempted clearance and headed into his own net as goalkeeper Chris Kirkland prepared to deal with a routine left-wing cross from El-Hadji Diouf.
But Denny Landzaat equalised for Wigan when Abdoulaye Meite tried to intercept a cross from Emmerson Boyce but steered the ball into Landzaat's path and he accepted the chance to score.
Nicolas Anelka then wasted a great chance to restore Bolton's lead as he lifted a penalty high over the crossbar after Andreas Granqvist handled a Danny Guthrie cross. However, Nolan did put Bolton in front again before half-time, flicking the ball past Kirkland when Granqvist had blocked a shot from Anelka.
Kevin Davies put the result beyond doubt by steering a Diouf cross into the net with 20 minutes left and Anelka made amends for his earlier penalty miss by scoring Bolton's fourth from close range in last minute.
