England Confirm Switzerland Friendly
Football: Steve McClaren's successor will open his reign as England manager with a home friendly against Switzerland, so long as they are in place before February 6.
Should Steve McClaren's successor be installed before February 6, he will open his reign as England manager with a home friendly against Switzerland.
The Football Association has confirmed the fixture, to be played at Wembley. It will be the 20th time the two countries have played each other, with England having won 12 and drawn four of the meetings to date.
England had already agreed to play France at the Stade de France in Paris on March 26, but no decision has yet been taken on matches in the summer. A friendly against Scotland remains a possibility but the FA may wait until it has appointed a new England manager before making a decision.
The last time England played Switzerland - in Coimbra, Portugal, during the group stage of Euro 2004 - they won 3-0, with Wayne Rooney scoring his first two goals in a competitive international and Steven Gerrard also on the score sheet. Switzerland have not played in England since a 1-1 draw in the opening match of Euro 96, when Alan Shearer opened the scoring for the hosts, before Kubilay Türkyılmaz grabbed a late equalizer.
