New Cardinal for Ireland
For the first time in Irish history, Ireland has three living Catholic cardinals.
In Rome yesterday Pope Benedict XVI elevated Archbishop Sean Brady, 68, to the post of cardinal (pictured above). He joins Dr Cathal Daly and Dr Des Connell as cardinals in Ireland. The move has added to growing speculation that there will be a papal visit to Ireland next year.
The leader of Ireland's Catholics and Archbishop of Armagh was among 24 new cardinals to be created at a special consistory service in the Vatican.
Northern Ireland Secretary Shaun Woodward, who attended yesterday's service, congratulated Cardinal Brady. 'He is a man of great integrity and spiritual strength and I know that his elevation to the College of Cardinals will be a matter of much rejoicing for the Catholic community throughout Ireland,' he said.
The ceremony was also attended by Irish President Mary McAleese and Northern Ireland's Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness.
The additional cardinals will bring the total to 202 members.
