FA Terminates Mcclaren's Contract
Steve McClaren's dismally lackluster 16-month tenure as England manager has come to an end
Steve McClaren's dismally lackluster 16-month tenure as the England manager came to an end today when he was sacked following an emergency FA board meeting at Soho Square. The decision to terminate his contract, taken by the FA's 12-man board, came as no surprise following last night's 3-2 defeat at home to Croatia - a result that confirmed England's failure to qualify for a major tournament for the first time since 1994.
McClaren leaves his post as statistically the worst England manager of all time, having lost five of his 18 matches in charge. Yet, with more than two years left of his contract, he will be entitled to £2.5m in compensation.
The search will now begin for McClaren's successor. Jose Mourinho and Martin O'Neill were immediately installed as 7-2 favorites with the bookies, but neither man is thought to particularly want the job.
McClaren was not at today's FA meeting, but it is understood that he will be holding a press conference in Yarm at midday today. The FA, meanwhile, will be holding a press conference at 9.45am to confirm the news.
