Renault Closer to Signing Alonso for 2008 Season
Renault boss, Flavio Briatore, says there is a "60% chance" Fernando Alonso will rejoin the team he left for McLaren
Fernando Alonso has a "60% chance" of rejoining Renault for 2008, according to their formula one team principal, Flavio Briatore. If agreement is forthcoming, he said, the deal could be announced "imminently".
Briatore's words appear to spell the end at Renault for Giancarlo Fisichella and Heikki Kovalainen. "We have an advantage [in taking Alonso] because we know him. Between today and the day after tomorrow it will be decided," Briatore added. Alonso left Renault for McLaren last year after winning back-to-back drivers' titles.
Briatore also spoke on formula one's new spy probe in which Renault have been charged with unauthorized possession of confidential McLaren information. "When we discovered everything, we informed McLaren and the FIA," he said. "We found out who had brought these disks. When you have a thousand employees it is difficult to notice what is happening."
