Gould Bounces Back to Frustrate Stevens
Snooker: Martin Gould recovered from 3-0 down to beat Matthew Stevens in the Northern Ireland Trophy in Belfast.
Martin Gould, last season's English amateur champion, made a remarkable television debut by recovering from 3-0 down to beat Matthew Stevens, the world No20, in the Northern Ireland Trophy at the Waterfront Hall, Belfast. Stevens, who has developed a reputation for losing from winning positions, missed the pink for 4-0 and was caught at 3-3.
Leading 4-3, he stood on the verge of victory, only for Gould to steal the eighth frame on the black with a 49 clearance and take the decider in four scoring visits. Marco Fu also failed to reach the last 32, beaten 5-4 by Adrian Gunnell, the world No40. Mark King's marathon 5-4 win over John Parrott required four hours, 10 minutes' play.
