Torres and Alonso Deliver Double Blow to Liverpool

Soccer: Groin strain rules Spain striker out for three weeks, while Xabi Alonso fractures metatarsal.
Fernando Torres will be out for three weeks with a groin injury sustained in Liverpool's 1-1 Premier League draw with Arsenal yesterday, just one of three injuries picked up by members of Rafael Benítez's out-of-sorts side, which has now won just one of their last five games.

Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano both sustained foot injuries, with the Spaniard fracturing a metatarsal while his fellow midfielder suffered severe bruising. Neither is likely to play in Wednesday Carling Cup tie against Cardiff.

"A scan this morning has shown a tear to an adductor muscle and we expect Fernando to be out for about three weeks," said a Liverpool spokesman of Torres. "As for Xabi Alonso, an x-ray showed a fracture to the fourth metatarsal in his left foot. Xabi will be seen by a consultant tomorrow after which we will have a much better idea of the timescales involved.

"With regards to Javier Mascherano, he had an x-ray which showed no bone injury, but he will receive intensive treatment on extensive bruising in his foot."
