Symonds and Haddin Inspire Australia

Australia gained a measure of revenge for their World Twenty20 semi-final loss to India by inflicting an 84-run defeat on the hosts in the second one-day international in Kochi.

Just as in the opening match in Bangalore on Saturday - which was eventually abandoned because of rain - the tourists recovered from a shaky opening to post an imposing score.

The stand-in captain, Adam Gilchrist, fell for a duck in the first over to Zaheer Khan, but Matthew Hayden hit three sixes in his 89-ball 75, before his Queensland team-mate Andrew Symonds responded with 87 off 83 deliveries.

But the most brutal hitting of the innings came from Brad Haddin, the 29-year-old wicket-keeper playing as a specialist batsman. He thrashed 87 not out off 69 balls, launching two of his three sixes off Harbhajan Singh, and added 108 in 15 overs with Symonds.

The Indian response never really got going as they lost wickets at regular intervals and were all out for 222 midway through the 48th over. Brad Hogg finished with three for 40, while skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni top-scored with 58 before being the last man out. Of the rest, only Rahul Dravid, who recently stepped down as India captain, passed 20.

The third game of the seven-match series takes place on Friday in Hyderabad.
