Britain's Women Prosper in 400m

Athletics: Britain will have two women in tomorrow's 400m final, while Veronica Campbell took the gold in the women's 100m.
There was mixed success for British athletes today at the world athletics championships in Osaka. Christine Ohuruogua and Nicola Sanders both won their respective semi-finals with personal bests to make it through to tomorrow's 400m final, but Phillips Idowu could only manage sixth in the men's triple jump.

Sanders became only the fourth Briton to run a sub-50 time after winning her semi-final in 49.77sec and Ohuruogu continued her impressive comeback from a 12-month ban for missing three out-of-competition drug tests to post 50.16sec.

And with defending champion Tonique Williams-Darling and world leader Sanya Richards absent from the championships, Sanders and Ohuruogu are strong contenders to add to Great Britain's medal tally following Kelly Sotherton's heptathlon bronze on Sunday. "When I crossed the line I was shocked at my time. I'm happy but it's about performing in the final," said Sanders.

Commonwealth Games champion Idowu struggled to sixth place in the triple jump final after managing just 17.09 metres, 65cm behind the winner Nelson Evora of Portugal. Andy Baddeley produced a storming final 100m to secure a place in Wednesday's 1,500m final after grabbing the last qualifying spot in his heat in 3min 43.03sec. Also in the hunt for a British medal tomorrow will be Martyn Bernard and Tom Parsons in the men's high jump final.

Elsewhere, a thrilling women's 100m final ended with a photo finish. Jamaica's Veronica Campbell and defending champion Lauryn Williams both recorded times of 11.01sec, but the judges' decision ended up going Campbell's way. Carmelita Jeter finished third in 11.02sec.

In the 10,000m Kenenisa Bekele win his third crown beating fellow Ethiopian Sileshi Sihinend into second place.
