Keane Unveils Gordon and Targets Further Signings
Soccer: The safest hands in Sunderland were presented to the press today, while Roy Keane revealed plans for further signings.
Sunderland unveiled their record new signing Craig Gordon this morning as manager Roy Keane revealed he is also on the verge of signing his namesake and fellow Leesider, Roy O'Donovan. Gordon finally sealed a move to the Stadium of Light yesterday in a deal which could be worth £9million to his former club Hearts, while O'Donovan is undergoing a medical at the club today.
The Cork City striker has been in demand this summer and looked set to join Fulham at the end of last month, before Keane turned his head at the eleventh hour. "Roy is having a medical this morning after we reached an agreement with Cork City," said Keane. "He's done very well in the League of Ireland but is ready for a new challenge. He knows where the back on the net is, he's aggressive and could do very well for us."
Keane is also hoping to hear in the next 24 hours whether his bid for Tottenham's Egyptian striker Mido has been successful. "One or two other clubs have shown a bit of interest but we expect an answer in the next 24 hours," he added. "We are hopeful but until a player signs on the dotted line you can never be sure."
Gordon revealed that the presence of Keane at Sunderland was instrumental in persuading him to swap his hometown club for Wearside. "It was great to finally be allowed to speak to Sunderland and come down and meet the manager and see the facilities we have here," he said. "I'm delighted to have finally signed. It's really geared up to being a massive club and once I spoke to the manager my mind was made up. We sat down with a cup of tea and he was very clear on his visions and what he expects from his players."
Gordon expects to shake off a minor shoulder injury in time to face Tottenham in the season opener on Saturday, and also feels his hefty price tag will not be a burden. "Prices are going up all over the place and it's a big story because it's a goalkeeper but I expect the prices to keep rising," he said. "I don't think I'll be the most expensive for very long. To leave Hearts behind - the club I supported as a boy - is hard, but you come down here and see the difference between the SPL and the Premiership and it's something you have to go and experience. It's a fantastic place to play football."
