Schuster Eager to Bring Robben to Real
The Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster today reiterated his desire to bring Arjen Robben to the Bernabéu, insisting the deal is "very important" for the club's season.
Madrid have been chasing Robben and Feyenoord's Dutch Under-21 international Royston Drenthe for much of the summer, with Schuster believing the acquisition of the two wingers would be a major boost to the club. "I would be a lot more relaxed if they were here," Schuster said. "Getting Robben here is very important for us."
Schuster, who replaced Real's title-winning coach Fabio Capello this summer, added that signing the Chelsea player would give him a lot more options in terms of team selection. "Having Robben would allow Robinho and Gonzalo Higuaín to be on the right," he said. "I want a lot of mobility there, similar to what Zinedine Zidane had. I am sure that we haven't closed our squad yet."
Schuster also responded to reports that José Antonio Reyes would join Atlético Madrid in the next few days, admitting that he expected the Spaniard to remain at Real, where he spent last season on loan from Arsenal. "We had options to keep him here and I would be surprised to see him go. I thought he would stay because he was happy," he said.
Madrid club president Ramón Calderón also revealed that Real intend to make another Arsenal player, Cesc Fábregas, their No1 transfer target for next summer. During his election campaign Calderón promised to bring in Robben, Fábregas and Kaka, and today claimed Robben would arrive this summer, Fábregas next year and Kaka in 2009. "There's a chance that they will all be here by the end of my third year in office," he said.
