Rasmussen Reigns in the Pyrenees to Extend Overall Lead
Cycling: Tour de France: The race leader won stage 16 to extend his overall advantage to more than three minutes.
Michael Rasmussen reinforced his dominance of this year's Tour de France today with a storming victory in stage 16 that extended his overall lead to more than three minutes. The Dane, who was booed to the start line in Orthez, produced another emphatic climbing display before leaving his nearest rival Alberto Contador standing with less than a kilometre remaining to cross the line 35 seconds in front at the Col d'Aubisque.
Contador eventually finished third, with Levi Leipheimer second after a strong climb up the final ascent. The Spaniard now trails by 3min 10sec, with Cadel Evans now 5min 3sec adrift and Leipheimer fifth, 5min 59sec back.
