British Soldier Killed in Afghanistan
Two others injured after operation with Afghan troops in Helmand province this morning.
One British soldier was killed and two others were injured in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan this morning, the Ministry of Defence said today.
The soldier, from the 1st Battalion The Grenadier Guards, died after being shot while on an operation with Afghan troops near Gereshk at about 8am local time.
He was evacuated by helicopter but was pronounced dead on arrival at the field hospital. The soldier's next of kin have been informed, the MoD said.
The latest British death came as US-led coalition and Afghan troops clashed with militants in separate battles in southern Afghanistan, leaving 36 suspected Taliban rebels dead. Six police officers were killed in roadside blasts.
Today's death brings the number of British military fatalities in Afghanistan since the start of operations in November 2001 to 64.
Of these, 41 were killed in action or died as a result of injuries sustained in action, while 23 died either as a result of illness, non-combat injuries or accidents
