Sailing: British Trio Battle to Yngling Title at World Championship
British trio Sarah Webb, Sarah Ayton and Pippa Wilson won the Yngling title at the world championships in Portugal.
Sarah Webb survived a drenching but with her crew-mates Sarah Ayton and Pippa Wilson won the Yngling title at the world championships in Cascais, Portugal, yesterday.
The victory caps an outstanding season for the British trio and pushes them firmly into pole position in their battle for selection for the Beijing Olympics with Britain's Shirley Robertson. The American crew of Sally Barkow, Carrie Howe and Debbie Capozzi came second ahead of Robertson, Annie Lush and Lucy Macgregor.
Going into the medal race only one point apart, the battle between the two British teams seemed certain to decide the title. Ayton, Webb and Wilson looked in control in the middle of the course and were never in danger from their British rivals, especially after the latter were called for a penalty.
With the Americans threatening, Ayton, Webb and Wilson crossed the line sixth to win the title by a single point.
