Motor Racing: Hamilton Hot Alonso Hotter
Lewis Hamilton posted the third fastest time at practice for the US grand prix in Indianapolis.
Fernando Alonso put down a marker yesterday in his duel with his McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton when he set the fastest time in the second free practice for tomorrow's US grand prix.
However, Hamilton signaled his determination to extend his eight-point championship lead over Alonso by being second fastest on his first visit to the famous circuit.
At the end of a week highlighted by speculation that their relationship had been damaged by remarks made by the twice world champion after Hamilton's maiden grand prix victory in Montreal, the McLaren pair outpaced the Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen, with Nick Heidfeld's BMW Sauber fifth quickest. David Coulthard was sixth in his Red Bull-Renault, Jenson Button 10th for Honda and the 19-year-old Sebastian Vettel 11th on his F1 debut.
