Soccer: Transfer round-up: Sunderland have signed versatile Reading full-back Greg Halford for £3.5m
Sunderland have signed versatile Reading full-back Greg Halford for £3.5m as Roy Keane begins reinforcing his squad ahead of their return to the Premiership.
Halford, who only joined the Royals in January, is understood to have undergone a medical at the Stadium of Light over the weekend and signed a contract this morning. Keane was eager to strengthen his defence after right-back Danny Simpson and centre-back Jonny Evans, who spent the second half of last season season on loan at Sunderland, returned to Manchester United. Sunderland are expected to officially confirm Halford's arrival later today.
Fellow Premiership new boys Birmingham, meanwhile, have offered West Bromwich Albion £3.5m for striker Diomansy Kamara. Manager Steve Bruce has been looking to add a striker after Arsene Wenger confirmed he wanted Nicklas Bendtner, who spent lastseason at St Andrew's on loan, back at Arsenal next season.
West Brom are keen to hang on to Kamara, who scored 23 goals last season, but he is desperate to play in the Premiership and the Baggies might feel they are better served cashing in than keeping a player against his will. If they do decide to accept the current bid it would represent a £2m profit for them on Kamara, who arrived from Modena, via Portsmouth, for £1.5m in 2005. He would also be Bruce's second significant signing of the summer, following Arsenal's Fabrice Muamba, who signed a permanent deal with Birmingham in May after playing for them on loan last season.
