Rugby League: Salford Stand By Their Coach
Long-serving coach Karl Harrison has been assured his Salford job is safe despite a 66-6 thumping against Catalans Dragons.
Salford claim there is no immediate threat to Karl Harrison's future as coach despite the 66-6 defeat against Catalans Dragons that left them four points adrift in the Super League table. "There are no discussions over Karl's future," said the chief executive Dave Tarry. "The coaching staff need our support. The result in France was a disappointment but we had four young kids in there, and Catalans were on fire.'
Harrison, a former Great Britain prop, is the longest-serving coach in the Super League after joining when they were in equally serious trouble in June 2002. He was unable to keep them up that year but after securing immediate promotion the club earned a first appearance in the top six play-offs last autumn.
However, this year they have won only three of their first 14 and conceded 166 points in losing their last three. There is little prospect of an immediate improvement with a game against in-form Huddersfield on Friday followed by a trip to St Helens, moreover, their captain Malcolm Alker is out for at least a month after breaking a hand in Perpignan. "I'm working harder than ever," said Harrison, who signed a three-year deal last summer. "But what can we do without players?"
Warrington's Adrian Morley is clear to play in Monday's derby against St Helens. Morley had been put on report, for the second time in four games, for an alleged high tackle on Quins' Julien Rinaldi, but the RFL's video-review panel have not referred it to a disciplinary hearing.
