Police have today identified a suspect in the Madeleine McCann inquiry after tip-offs by journalists, including a reporter from the Sunday Mirror.

Sunday Mirror journalist Lori Campbell reported Robert Murat to local police officers in Portugal, as well as to the British embassy and Leicestershire police.

Portuguese police said Mr Murat is a formal suspect in the hunt for four-year-old Madeleine McCann, who disappeared 12 days ago while on holiday with her family in the resort of Praia da Luz.

Mr Murat has become a regular sight crossing the police tape outside the McCanns' holiday apartment in the village of Praia da Luz since Madeleine's disappearance 11 days ago.

He told reporters he has a daughter the same age as the missing girl who looks very similar to her.

Other journalists covering the story had also spoken to Mr Murat. Under the headline "My talks with cop quiz man", Daily Mirror reporter Vanessa Allen today wrote that he "rarely spoke about Madeleine herself and instead seemed more concerned about the progress of the police investigation".

Mr Murat made himself known to journalists on Friday May 4, the day after Madeleine disappeared. He chatted about the case but initially refused to reveal his role.

Describing himself as half-Portuguese, he said he was helping the McCanns, from Rothley, Leicestershire, as a translator.
