Arsene Wenger has been fined £2,500 and "severely censured" by the Football Association for accusing an assistant referee of lying at the Carling Cup final.

Wenger had denied a charge of improper conduct and/or bringing the game into disrepute for the remarks he made after his side's bad-tempered defeat to Chelsea on February 23. But an FA disciplinary commission today found against him, highlighting his use of the word "lie" when describing the assistant's intervention in the the sending-off of Emmanuel Adebayor.

"At a disciplinary commission hearing today, Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger was fined £2,500 and severely censured," read an FA statement. "The commission said that they judged that the use of the word 'lie' constituted improper conduct."

Wenger repeated the charge on several occassions after the final, even re-stating it three days later at a press conference following Arsenal's FA Cup defeat to Blackburn. On that occasion he said: "I feel Adebayor didn't punch anybody so when the linesman says he punched somebody he lies. We have watched on [a] microscope and if you see Adebayor punching Lampard I would like you to show me that ... It's strange, just a coincidence to look at who has been charged."
