Guillermo Canas won a near-three-hour battle with fellow Argentine Agustin Calleri to reach the final of the Barcelona Open, coming through 7-6 6-7 6-2. The 12th seed, who had treatment on his right forearm and his feet, could have wrapped up the match in the second set, but double-faulted on his second match point when serving. Instead he needed a third set to seal his place in the final.
Canas, who has risen from 142 in the rankings to 28 since the start of the year, let Calleri back into the match when he was broken at 5-4 in the second set, but his resilience, consistency and fitness eventually wore down his compatriot. Calleri recovered from 3-0 down to be on serve at 3-2 in the third set, but Canas broke in the next game and repeated the feat two games later to clinch victory in a match that lasted two hours 57 minutes.
