Boxing: Haye Quick to Stake Heavyweight Claim
David Haye's heavyweight debut was impressive as he beat Tomasz Bonin in the opening round.
The European cruiserweight champion David Haye produced a spectacular win in his debut fight as a heavyweight when he floored Poland's Tomasz Bonin three times before the fight was halted after only 1min 45sec of the opening round.
Before the fight Haye had bragged he was already good enough to beat any of the current pretenders to the world heavyweight title, but after it he admitted he would be "crazy" not to pursue plans to fight France's Jean-Marc Mormeck, who currently holds the WBC and WBA versions of the world cruiserweight title. With this victory Haye, 26, improved his record to 19 wins against one defeat and showed he has a future as a heavyweight whatever the outcome of his likely autumn world-title challenge.
