Cycling: Basso Suspended As Doping Case Reopens
Ivan Basso has been suspended from the Discovery Channel team after Italian police reopened its investigation into a doping inquiry involving the Italian.
The Giro d'Italia winner, Ivan Basso, was yesterday suspended by his Discovery Channel team after the Italian anti-doping agency decided to reopen its investigation into his alleged implication in the Operation Puerto doping inquiry. Basso was pulled out of today's Flêche Wallonne Classic one-day race, and his defence of the Giro title is in doubt. He is to appear before the Italian Olympic Committee's anti-doping body on May 2, accused of "use or attempted use of a prohibited substance or a prohibited method". Johan Bruyneel, team manager at Discovery, said: "It is unfortunate that this is now occurring. However, I have spoken to Ivan and although frustrated he agrees with the decision we have taken." Basso was withdrawn from last year's Tour de France immediately before the start in Strasbourg after the allegations of his involvement in Operation Puerto, a Spanish police inquiry.
