Real Make Clear Their Desire to Sign Ronaldo
Soccer: Real Madrid president Ramón Calderón has revealed Cristiano Ronaldo will be their main transfer target this summer.
The Real Madrid president, Ramón Calderón, has reiterated his desire to sign Cristiano Ronaldo, less than 48 hours after the Portugal winger stated his intention "to stay at Manchester United for many years".
In an interview on Spanish television Calderón said that Ronaldo was his main transfer target for this summer. "We really like him but he belongs to Manchester United and they have to decide to sell him first," he said. "If that is the case then we'll be first in the queue, although we won't be paying €80m (£54m) for him. I don't think any player, even someone with Cristiano Ronaldo's quality, is worth that money, but we are definitely interested if Manchester United want to sell him."
Calderón also said that Real's current coach, Fabio Capello, "might not want to continue at the end of the season", though he would not be drawn on a potential replacement. "Of course I like Bernd Schuster, Rafa Benítez and Jose Mourinho," he said. "I like all the great coaches."
The Coventry striker Wayne Andrews has returned to the Ricoh Arena after his loan spell with Bristol City was cut short by a season-ending knee injury. "His season is over so he will go back to Coventry," said the Robins manager, Gary Johnson. "He has tendinitis in his knee and there is a good chance it will require surgery."
Darlington's chairman, Jon Sotnick, has claimed that reports of crowd trouble at Sunday's defeat against Hartlepool were "exaggerated and inaccurate". One newspaper reported that the match, which Hartlepool won 3-0, was "marred by sickening violence" but Sotnick, who admits there were clashes between rival fans in the town after the match, insisted there were no incidents during the game. "Things could not have run any more smoothly," he said.
