March 11 Memorial Unveiled
A cylindrical glass tower etched with the names of 191 victims of Europe's worst attack by Islamists was unveiled yesterday as a monument to those killed by 10 bombs planted on Madrid trains three years ago.
The glass tower beside Atocha railway station, where one of four trains were attacked, was formally unveiled by King Juan Carlos in a simple ceremony which avoided the long political controversies sparked by the bombings.
Visitors filed through a blue chamber under the 35ft tower, where light filtered through to highlight messages left by wellwishers in the days after the attacks. The unveiling of the monument came as 29 men stood trial at a special Madrid court house for their alleged role in the attacks on March 11 2004.
