Beckham Set to Miss Bayern Tie With Knee Ligament Injury
Soccer: David Beckham is set to miss Real Madrid's Champions League trip to Munich after sustaining knee ligament damage, much to the chagrin of Steve McClaren.
Steve McClaren might as well cancel that flight. The England coach had announced that he would travel to Munich to see David Beckham play against Bayern in the Champions League tomorrow night but the midfielder looks certain to miss out after he injured a knee ligament during Real Madrid's 1-1 draw with Getafe at the Bernabéu last night.
Beckham will undergo tests today to ascertain the nature and full extent of the injury, which he suffered chasing a ball in the right-hand channel. Club doctors were prepared only to describe it as "an injury to the lateral-internal ligament of the right knee". Madrid's coach, Fabio Capello, said: "It looks serious but I do not want to say how bad until the doctors do the scan."
When asked if Beckham was ruled out of the Bayern match, Capello replied: "Definitely. It is a big blow for everyone."
Beckham pulled up in the 63rd minute when he chased the ball down the right channel after a slick one-two. Unable to pull the ball back comfortably, his run took him into the advertising hoardings and he came away limping. He was still struggling when he was withdrawn five minutes later, stopping for a quick word with the club doctor before disappearing down the tunnel, clearly still in pain.
José Antonio Reyes also injured a knee ligament in the match - this time in his left knee. He was withdrawn on a stretcher and doctors fear that the injury may be serious.
A Fernando Morientes goal gave third-placed Valencia a 1-0 home win over Celta Vigo and moved them on to 46 points. The former Liverpool striker volleyed home from Hugo Viana's cross after 67 minutes for his 10th goal of the season.
Bilbao's problems deepened with a 2-0 defeat at the bottom club, Gimnastic.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored one goal and set up another on Saturday to help Inter beat Livorno 2-1 and move 16 points clear at the top of Italy's Serie A. Second-placed Roma drew 1-1 with Ascoli.
Livorno's captain, Cristiano Lucarelli, had opened the scoring with a curling free-kick in the 27th minute before Ibrahimovic passed to Julio Cruz to equalise in the 35th. Ibrahimovic then struck a 66th-minute free-kick to earn the win.
"We earned an important victory today," the Swede said. "We have everything in our hands and we have to try not to make mistakes."
Roma rallied to a 1-1 draw through the Sweden midfielder Christian Wilhelmsson's 85th-minute goal after Andrea Soncin had put last-placed Ascoli ahead in the 31st minute. Inter lead Serie A with 70 points, followed by Roma on 54. Palermo lie third.
