Several paintings and drawings by the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso have been stolen from the home of the artist's granddaughter in Paris, police revealed today.

Two of the stolen paintings, Maya with her Doll, which shows one of Picasso's daughters, and Portrait of Jacqueline, depicting the painter's second wife are believed to be valued at 50m euros (£34m), according to police.

There was no immediate estimate of the value of all the stolen works, but the city's Picasso Museum director Anne Baldassari said: "It was a very large theft."

The artworks were taken from the home of Diana Widmaier-Picasso on Monday night when thieves broke into the woman's apartment in the seventh arrondissement in the French capital.
