Yes, Hawaii is known for its great beaches. And true, there’s nothing quite like basking under the warm Hawaiian sun and feeling your cares drift away with each gentle wave that laps at your feet. But there’s a lot more to the Aloha State than soaking up some sun. You can get out and do something!

The out door activities that Hawaii has to offer are almost unending. It doesn’t matter whether you get to the activity by land, air or sea, you will find something to do in Hawaii.

First, let’s look at what Hawaii has in store for hikers. Every island will has trails for everyone from the seasoned professional to the beginner. Hawaiian nature tours such as waterfalls and rainforests area a good start. Haleakala, which is on Maui, is considered among the best spots to hike. If you are on Oahu, there is Diamond Head waiting for you. If you make it through the forty five minute hike to the top, you will be left breathless by the views of Waikiki, Honolulu and of course, the Pacific Ocean.

If hiking is not your thing and you would rather pedal your way through Hawaii, you will not be left out. Haleakala offers a downhill ride that is very enjoyable in both exercise and scenery. Then there is the Garden of the Gods on Lanai. This looks like the surface of the moon with very colorful rocks.

Another popular way to see this island is horseback riding. One of the United States largest ranches, a sprawling 175,000 acres, Parker Ranch is on the Big Island where you can pretend you are a cowboy for the afternoon.

Even though you may not think of it, Hawaii also has skiing for you to enjoy. From late November through April, the peak of Mauna Kea, located on the big island, is covered with snow. But, if you are inexperienced, you should not attempt these slopes. They are not for the timid.

The ocean provides many exciting recreational opportunities. Take a surfing lesson at Waikiki Beach, where gentle waves and shallow waters are perfect for novices. Hawaii attractions scuba snorkeling are always a big hit! Snorkel at Hanauma Bay or go SCUBA diving at Cathedrals, located just off Lanai’s south shore. Hook a marlin or tuna on the deep waters off Kailua-Kona on the Big Island. Or head to Kauai and enjoy a kayaking trip along the breathtaking Napali Coast.

To see all the beauty of Hawaii from the top, try hang gliding or helicopter at one of the many providers on the island. Oahu even has skydiving to offer you. There, a licensed instructor will show you how to not panic when you jump out of a plane at 13,000 feet so you can open your shoot on time.
