Stern said in an interview that aired Monday, "We were going to make everything legally binding in less than two weeks. I can't even talk about it." Stern and Smith exchanged vows in a commitment ceremony In September reportedly to prove their love. The ceremony was not legally binding. Stern’s sister, Bonnie, has been in the Bahamas to help take care of Smith’s daughter, Dannielynn, and to comfort her brother during his time of need. Bonnie reportedly said, "They had plans to get a yacht and to buy an engagement ring. They were going to get married February 27. It was going to be a real marriage."

Stern was with Smith’s 20-year old son when he suddenly died in early September only three days after his sister Dannielynn was born. Stern told Entertainment Tonight that Smith’s will named Daniel as her heir. Stern said, "Because Dannielynn wasn’t here, everything went to Daniel. But now Daniel’s gone and Dannielynn is an only child, everything goes to Dannielynn. I am named executor in that will, and I was also appointed or named as Daniel’s guardian in that will." Stern now says that he will fight for custody of Dannielynn and claims to be the baby’s father. He also says that he will fight Smith’s estranged mother Virgie Arthur. Stern said, "As long as I have one breath left in my body, that woman will not see Dannielynn. Anna despised that woman, just despised that woman."

There are many out there that doubt that the two were in love or looking to get married. There are many out there that are saying that Stern was nothing more than a "gofer" or a "lackey." There are many out there that question how Stern can stand by claiming that he is the father of Dannielynn when there is a list that continues to grow daily of possible "baby daddy’s." Stern reportedly accepted $1 million to give an interview about his relationship with Smith. There are many out there that would call that despicable. There are many out there that thing the whole situation is just plain weird.
