Sheffield United to Sign Jon Stead From Sunderland
Soccer: Sheffield United have signed Sunderland flop Jon Stead, while Ben Thatcher is off to Charlton Athletic.
Sheffield United are poised to complete the signing of Jon Stead from Sunderland this morning for an initial fee of £750,000.
The 23-year-old striker has passed a medical and will sign a three-and-a-half-year deal at Bramall Lane, and Sunderland could eventually receive up to £1.25m for the player, who has been on loan at Derby for the last three months.
Stead has been less than prolific in recent times, with just four goals to his name this season, three of them scored in consecutive games during a his loan spell at Pride Park. Last season he managed just one goal in 34 appearances, many of them as a substitute, for a Sunderland team relegated from the Premiership with a record low number of points.
Elsewhere in the Premiership, Manchester City defender Ben Thatcher is on the verge of signing for Charlton Athletic. Stuart Pearce is ready to let the defender leave Eastlands, with Stephen Jordan currently the first choice left-back at the club, and centre-back Sylvain Distin also able to provide cover in that position.
"The clubs have agreed a fee and the player is speaking with Charlton," said Pearce. "That's as far as we are now. The finance we can gain from Ben going can be invested in other positions in the team. I believe I have enough cover to cope in his absence."
