Athletics: Kipchoge Smashes 10km World Record in Madrid

Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge broke the world 10km record at the San Silvestre Vallecana race in Madrid on New Year's Eve. Kipchoge, 22, was given the victory in 26min 54sec with Ethiopia's Zersenay Tadesse credited with the same time inches away in second place. Kipchoge's time is 8sec faster than the officially-ratified world record of 27:02, set by Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie in Doha in 2002. Australia's London-based Craig Mottram was third in 27:39, a national record. In the women's race, Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia beat Australia's 2004 world cross-country champion, Benita Johnson. Prokopcuka won in 31:55, with Johnson 10sec behind.
