US kills Taliban chief

One of the most wanted Taliban commanders in Afghanistan has been killed by an air strike after a manhunt lasting five years, the US military said. Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Osmani, military chief in southern Afghanistan, died with two other fighters when his vehicle was hit by missiles last week. Osmani is believed to be one of the four highest-ranking figures in the Taliban.

Nigeria: Bird flu spreads

The deadly H5N1 bird flu virus has spread to two new regions of Nigeria, one of three countries identified as least able to deal with the disease and prevent it from becoming a global pandemic. Sixty per cent of poultry is kept by backyard farmers, making human-to-bird contact common and surveillance difficult, raising the risk of mutation. The virus has infected about 206 people since 2003 and killed at least 114.
