Marine Dies in Clash With Taliban
A Royal Marine has been killed and a second seriously injured in a battle with Taliban fighters in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said last night.
It said the marines were injured in an operation with Afghan forces on the outskirts of the village of Garmsir, which Taliban forces had been attacking. They were both airlifted to the UK military hospital in Camp Bastion where one, who is not expected to be named until later today, died.
The second marine was described as stable after surgery. The fighting took place early yesterday. Lt Col Andy Price, UK forces spokesman in Afghanistan, said: "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family who suffered a dreadful loss."
He said the operation achieved its aim of clearing Taliban fighters from a position where they were firing into the outskirts of the town.
Three Royal Marines were wounded by a suicide car bomber in neighbouring Kandahar on Sunday. A number of Afghan civilians were killed after the bomber attempted to ram British vehicles.
Forty-two British service personnel have been killed in Afghanistan since November 2001.
