Athletics: Powell and Richards Scoop Prizes
Asafa Powell and Sanya Richards have been named 2006 world athletes of the year by the IAAF.
Asafa Powell of Jamaica and America's Sanya Richards last night received cheques for $100,000 after being named the 2006 world athletes of the year by the International Association of Athletics Federations at a ceremony in Monte Carlo.
Both Powell and Richards are IAAF overall world-ranked No1s, and this season won shares of the IAAF Golden League $1m Jackpot.
Powell sped to a record 12 sub-10 second times for 100metres, while Richards took 15 straight victories at 400m and broke the 22-year-old American record with 48.70.
