Olmert Hardens Stance on Iran
Ehud Olmert, Israel's prime minister, arrived in Washington yesterday to rally opposition to Iran's nuclear programme as the repercussions of Israel's war against Hizbullah continued in Tel Aviv.
Mr Olmert was due to meet George Bush and Condoleezza Rice, the secretary of state, last night. He said his priorities were the Iranian threat and restarting negotiations with the Palestinians.
In Israel, Brigadier General Gal Hirsch resigned as commander of Israel's northern forces after an internal investigation criticised his conduct. The report found that troops were not adequately prepared for defending themselves against abduction attempts by Hizbullah. Brig Gen Hirsch said those above him in the military hierarchy should consider resigning.
Mr Olmert has also begun to use much stronger language about Iran. In an interview with the Washington Post, he compared Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to Adolf Hitler, saying he was "ready to commit crimes against humanity" and "has to be stopped".
