Jose Mourinho Feared for Petr Cech's Life As Goalkeeper Was Made to Wait Over Half an Hour for Ambulance
Soccer: Jose Mourinho intends to lodge an official complaint after Petr Cech was made to wait over half an hour for an ambulance after fracturing his skull.
Jose Mourinho today revealed he feared for Petr Cech's life as the goalkeeper was made to wait over half an hour for an ambulance in the Madejski Stadium dressing room after fracturing his skull in a collision with Reading midfielder Stephen Hunt.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Chelsea's Champions League tie with Barcelona tomorrow night, Mourinho did not make any further comments about the challenge itself, but questioned why Cech was made to wait so long.
"There are things that leave me in a very emotional situation," said Mourinho. "My goalkeeper was in the dressing room for 30 minutes waiting for an ambulance. He could not leave the dressing room properly. He had to go in a wheelchair in the lift when he had the injury.
"If my goalkeeper dies in that dressing room or in the process it is something English football has to think about. This is much more important than football. I would like someone to tell me why my goalkeeper was left in this situation." When asked if Chelsea would be making an official complaint, Mourinho replied: "We will."
His comments come after Didier Drogba earlier accused Hunt of intentionally attempting to injure Cech, while claiming that other teams "hate" Chelsea.
In an interview with French newspaper L'Equipe, the Chelsea striker rejected Hunt's claim that he did not set out to injure Cech during his team's 1-0 win on Saturday, in which the Czech goalkeeper suffered a fractured skull following the horrific collision.
"Don't tell me tall stories, this was not an accident," declared Drogba. "Hunt saw that he was going to collide with Petr and he didn't try to avoid it. The worst came after that. When Petr was carried out of the ground, Hunt was laughing. I'm not paranoid but they hate us. Some people will use any means to beat us."
Drogba said that Reading had set out to unsettle Chelsea from the start of the match. "We went there to play a match, but we soon realised that the guys facing us were out for the game of the season," he added. "From the first minute, [Hunt] tried to intimidate us, to show that he didn't fear us and that we'd better be ready for one hell of a challenge for 90 minutes."
Cech was visited by several of his team-mates yesterday at Radcliffe Infirmary's specialist neurosurgical unit in Oxford. A club statement released last night indicated that the 24-year-old, who is not expected to play again this year, is "improving" and "fully conscious".
Chelsea have yet to lodge a formal protest with the FA over Hunt's challenge and it now seems that the Reading midfielder will escape any disciplinary action.
