Amber's POV
I couldn't concentrate at school all day today. All I kept thinking about was Brandon. How is he doing right now? Is he still unconscious? Has he woken up yet? I need answers now.
RING! Snack break just ended. Time for AP physics. How am I going to go through AP physics without him? We were going to be partners for this one month assignment. This is our first class together during our high school years and now it's been washed away because of an accident. Why did Brandon run off? There are still so many questions that are unanswered.
"Class," says my physics teacher, Dr. Holstead. "We have a new member in our class, Michael Kilter."
A curly blonde hair, brown eye boy walks in the room. He is about 6 feet tall with a rocking body. He's currently wearing a red polo with light blue jeans along with some nice pair of Nikes. Michael looked as if he could be a model by now, by the looks of his body. A model that almost had my best friend killed.
"Amber, since Mr. Charlton won't be in class for a while, and since you now don't have a partner, Michael is now your new partner."
I can't believe it. I have to work with my best friend's enemy. Michael took Brandon's seat next to me.
"Hi, I'm Michael," he says with a smile that's worth almost a million dollars.
I shot him a glare. I did not want to have any type of relationship with him.
He looked away, puzzled. I tried to not look at him throughout Dr. Holstead's lecture. My eyes were either down on my notes or straight ahead looking at Dr. Holstead, but never to the left side of me, or else I would see the monster that hurt my best friend.
"Alright class," Dr. Holstead says. "I'm going to give you guys the last few minutes to work on that one month assignment with your partner." She went to her desk and started grading some other assignments.
I didn't want to even say a word to Michael so I stood up and walked over to her desk.
"Is there a problem?" Dr. Holstead asks.
"Uh, can I trade partners with someone?" I start to ask. "I don't feel so comfortable working with Michael. "
"Well, Miss Hamilton. I'm sorry, but there are no trade-offs. Everyone has started the assignment and it won't be fair that they have to start over because you feel uncomfortable with a boy. Besides, I bet Michael feels uncomfortable too. Today's his first day. Give him a chance"
"But..But," I stammer. I couldn't win this.
"No buts, now Miss Hamilton, I think you should start on that assignment, you are now a couple of days behind."
I decided to let it go. She was right. It wouldn't be fair for everyone else and to Michael. Also, it's just an assignment. It's not like I don't have to be friends with him.
I walked back to my seat.
"You know, in Twilight, it's the guy that wants to switch, not the girl," says Michael.
My face turned bright fire truck red. I can't believe he heard.
"Let's just start, okay," I say as I take out my assignment folder. "We have to write a report about inertia first."
"I think we should get to know each other before we start. Why do you hate me so much?" asks Michael with a grin. Is he trying to flirt with me?
"I'll give you a big hint." I start to say. "I'm best friends with Brandon Charlton. The guy that just so happens is in the hospital because of you."
Michael grew speechless.
Ring!!! That was the bell.
"I think we pretty much know each other now," I couldn't help but to say. "We'll work on our assignment, later."
I quickly packed up my things. I walked quickly out of the classroom before Michael was about to say another word.
Brandon's POV
Beep... Beep...
What was that noise? I woke up to see what that was. It was the heart rate machine. I looked around me. Where am I? Why is there an IV stuck in me. Where did all these Get Well balloons and flowers come from? I tried to get up but my right leg started hurting.
Ow! I thought. Am I in the hospital?
I wondered. What happened? How did I get here? What time is it right now? I looked around. I see Amber in front of me, asleep in the chair. She was wearing sweat pants and a Caltech t-shirt.
She looks so cute when she sleeps, I thought.
I looked at the clock. It read 4:00 pm. But exactly what day is it?
A nurse walks in. "Ah, Brandon you're up. I'm Nurse Jennifer. I will be taking care of you. Do you need anything?"
"No," I said politely. "Thank you though."
"Dr. Hamilton will be right with you, just hit that red button next to you if you need anything."
She walked out of the door. I looked over to the drawer next to me where I see is my cell phone that is plugged in with a cell phone charger. I took my phone and opened it. I got 124 text messages. I didn't bother checking them, except for the ones that are from Ryan. I got 3 texts from him.
"Dude, where are you? -Ryan" the first text says. It was sent on Saturday night. Where was I exactly?
I went to the second text message he sent me. "Hey, Amber, Tiffany, and I are here at the hospital right now. We hope you'll be alright. -Ryan"
Finally, I went to the last text message from him. "Hey bro, Amber, Tiffany, and I just left the hospital. Hope you will be alright. Sorry to hear about the bad news. Text me back okay? -Ryan"
Huh? Bad news? What was Ryan talking about? I quickly sent him a text back:
"Hey, just woke up, what are you talking about? And what day is it today? -Brandon"
I immediately got a text back.
"You don't know? Uhh.. wait until the doctor tells you. How are you though? Today is Tuesday by the way. -Ryan"
Huh? What is he trying to say? Today is really Tuesday? How can that be. Last night was the party. What's going on.
"Errm... Ermm."
It was from Amber. "Haaa......Brandon! You're awake!" she says, yawning.
"Hey, what just happened," I ask.
"Uh, you should wait till my dad talks to you. What do you remember?" she asks.
"Well, you were asked to dance with Chase Andrews and I went somewhere and yea," I said.
"Are you sure you don't remember anything else?" she questions.
I remembered the accident pretty well except on how I got here. I didn't want to tell Amber though. I didn't want her to see me as a careless person. She hates careless people and I already blew it when Chase asked me to drink.
"Nope," I lied. "How are.."
"Ah! Mr. Charlton. You have finally woken up," says Dr. Hamilton. Throughout my friendship with Amber, I've only met him once. "How are you feeling?"
"Confused," I reply.
"Well, let's start off. You were in a car accident Mr. Hamilton. We found you lying on the ground unconscious and then brought you here. You were then in a coma for at least 2 days."
I nodded then said, "Is there anything else?"
Dr. Hamilton opened his mouth then stopped. He must have bad news to give me.
"Listen, Brandon, this is hard for me to say but there may be a chance where you may never walk again. Your leg is badly messed up. We are going to have to go through many procedures. We first have to get you through surgery. After surgery, you are staying here for a week or two. Then we have to send you to a rehab in San Francisco. They treat people who were in car accidents. Then you have to come back for some additional scans. The whole process is going to take a couple of months, I'm sorry" said Dr. Hamilton.
I couldn't believe my ears. Never going to walk again? Couple of months? This was too much.
"I think I should leave you and Amber alone," said Dr. Hamilton. He walked out the door. Amber came towards me and brushes my hair with her fingers.
"Are you sure you don't remember what happened?" she asks.
I let out a sigh. I couldn't keep this secret from her any longer.
"Ambs, have you ever gotten a fight with an enemy before?" I start to ask.
She shakes her head. Of course not, she's a goody two shoes that's innocent. But a cute innocent goody two shoes.
"Well, it happened in sophomore year..." I started to say.
"Brandon.." she starts to say. "I know. When you were still unconscious, Ryan told me and Tiffany. We won't tell anything we promise. But why did you walk away from me?" She was tearing up.
I opened my mouth. No words came out.
"I-I-I.." I started to say. "I just felt jealous."
"Why?" said Ambs. "You know I'm always yours. I'm not going to leave my best friend for some sleazy guy."
She said that word again. Best friend. I wonder what she will think if I said the words "More than friends." I couldn't tell her. She will never feel the same way I feel about her.
"Let's forget about it Ambs. That was the past," I started to say. She cried harder.
"Brandon. The past is what brought you HERE!" Her tears turned into sobs. My heart just broke into a million pieces.
Without thinking, I took her hand and kissed it. She started to calm down. I began to play with her hands and fingers. They were so smooth and so soft.
"Please Ambs, don't cry," I started to say, still playing with her hands. "I don't like seeing you like this."
"And I don't like seeing you like this, here. I'm going to have to see you like this for the next few weeks," she says.
"Hey, Ambs, I'll be fine. Everything's going to be okay," I said reassuringly.
She nodded and said, "I hope so."
We spent the next few hours just talking. She brought back some of my assignments but I didn't bother looking at them. I just wanted to talk to her, to hang out with her before rehab. I was going to have all senior year to hang out with her, to talk to her and now I blew it. Sometimes, things are just so good to be true.
"It's 9:14 pm, Brandon," she says after our conversation about banana cream pie. "I have to get going. But I'll bring you some of that banana cream pie tomorrow at lunch."
"Okay Ambs, call me?" I ask.
"Of course," she says then kisses my forehead. "I'll call you once I'm done showering."
"Okay then, bye."
She walked out of the door leaving me only thinking about that kiss on my forehead. I guess when one door closes, another door opens. That door just happens to be my wish.
I hope you guys are going to enjoy this chapter! I hope it's long enough for some of you guys that requested to make my chapters longer (:
