Bosnia appeared braced for a paralysing battle after its presidential elections returned bitter opponents to the tripartite office. Seats were awarded to a Muslim, a Serb and a Croat. While the Muslim and Croat seats went to politicians keen to build a unified country based on civil rather than ethnic rights, the Serb seat went to a party threatening to break up the country unless it remains split into a Serb half and a Muslim-Croat half.
