Badminton: Hallam Advances Despite Mix-up
England's Tracey Hallam nearly missed her world championship game after Spanish officials changed it without telling her.
Tracey Hallam was given an unexpected fright over her schedule but England made a flying start to their World Championship campaign in Madrid yesterday.
Hallam was not even in Madrid's Palacio de Deportes when her match against Spain's Lucia Tavera was called to court.
Tavera was switched to the television court at the behest of Spanish TV but station officials forgot to inform the English referee Keith Hawthorne, so Hallam did not know she was due to play.
"It was a bit of a mix-up," said the 11th seed after her 21-6, 21-4 win. "They changed the schedule without going through the referee."
Hampshire's Andrew Smith reached the second round with a 21-15, 21-13 win over Spain's Pablo Abian.
Kristian Roebuck and Ian Palethorpe earned England's best win of the day in the doubles by beating the world No7 pair, Michal Logosz and Robert Mateusiak, 21-16, 11-21, 21-12.
Scotland's David Forbes and Stewart Kerr beat Andrei Konakh and Alexandr Russkikh.
