Toxic Spill Causes Space Station Emergency
Astronauts aboard the international space station declared an emergency yesterday after a toxic spill. Mission controllers do not know what caused poisonous potassium hydroxide to leak from an oxygen vent, but insisted the incident was not life threatening.
Flight engineer Jeff Williams and commander Pavel Vinogradov wore protective clothing to clean up the spill. Mike Suffredini, Nasa's space station manager, described the situation as stable. It was believed to be the first declared "spacecraft emergency" in the eight-year history of the half-built orbiting outpost.
