10 Ways To Run Errands More Efficiently

Are you tired of spending an entire day running errands? Time is valuable and, with the cost of gas rising, running errands can be doubly expensive. Now is the time to learn how to run those errands more efficiently. Here are 10 simple things you can do to save time and money and still accomplish everything you need to.
  1. Plan ahead. Keep a running list of errands you need to make. At the end of every day, take a few extra minutes to look at your calendar. Where will you be going the next day? Will you be passing by a location where you need to accomplish an errand? If so, schedule that errand into your day. You won't waste any gas since you will be passing by there anyway and you will save time by eliminating an extra trip later.
  2. Organize errands. Once you have your errands scheduled into your day, make a list of what you need to accomplish at each stop. If you need to run to the market for several items, having a list of those items will ensure that you do not forget anything, which would mean having to make an extra trip later.
  3. Keep documents such as prescriptions, receipts or coupons that you may need for your errands with you at all times. Whether you keep them in your purse, your planner or in your car, you will always be prepared for any errand.
  4. Organize your car for errands. Get some collapsible crates to keep in your trunk. You can fold them and keep them out of the way when not in use, but when you make purchases you will always have a place to contain your items neatly until you get home. It is also a good idea to keep some canvas tote bags in your car. You can bring them into the store to avoid the need to use plastic or paper bags or you can just keep them in your car to keep smaller items organized and make it easy to carry your items into your house.
  5. Keep some non-perishable snacks in your car. Adding errands into your day will increase the time that you are out and about. If you wind up stopping for fast food or adding a snack to your purchase, you will wind up spending more money than you need or want to.
  6. If you do not work outside the home and you have children, try to do your errands when your children are in school, at day care or at a play date. You will be able to do more in less time when you are alone and you will avoid the possibility of spending extra money on items that your children beg you to buy for them.
  7. If you work outside the home try running some errands on your lunch hour. If you do not work near any of the places you need to go, can you shop online for any of the things you need? Spending even 15 minutes of your lunch hour doing some virtual shopping can save you hours of running around. Try to stick with online stores that offer free shipping to avoid paying extra for shipping costs.
  8. If you work outside the home, try to schedule some errands into your drive to or from work, even if it means altering your normal route slightly. Even if you have to leave a few minutes earlier in the morning or get home a few minutes later in the evening, you will save time in the long run.
  9. If you have errands that you cannot schedule into any other day, set aside a few hours specifically to get them done. Always start at the furthest point away from home and work your way back to be as efficient as possible.
  10. Make note of the price of gas at the stations close to places you regularly go. Try to fill up your car each time you are near an inexpensive station so that you do not have to go out of your way and waste gas just to buy cheap gas.
Start incorporating these simple steps in your normal routine. Save time and money and be more efficient.
